The savings calculation
Subtract existing savings from the target and divide the remaining amount by the number of months. We round the monthly contribution up to the nearest cent so rounding does not leave a shortfall. If the target is already covered, the contribution is zero. Interest, inflation, taxes and exchange-rate changes are not included.
Example: save 6,000 in one year
In a hypothetical USD example, the target is 6,000, existing savings are 1,200 and the time available is 12 months. That leaves 4,800 to save, or 400 per month. With 24 months, the contribution would be 200. This is a calculation, not an investment-return projection.
| Time available | Monthly contribution, USD |
|---|---|
| 6 months | 800 |
| 12 months | 400 |
| 24 months | 200 |
Check whether the contribution fits
Compare the result with the money left after bills and everyday spending. If you have 300 available but need 400, review your target, timeline or spending plan. Do not count expected income as money already available.
If you miss a month
Recalculate using the amount actually saved and the number of months remaining. This shows the updated contribution. For several goals, calculate each separately and check their combined monthly contributions against your budget.
